Notre-Dame

A Christian jewel at the right heart of the town

Notre-Dame de Beaune

Basilica

This collegiate Basilica belongs to the last great Romanesque style churches of Burgundy. Its construction started in the middle of the 12th century on the Cluny Abbey’s pattern and it was completed at the beginning of the following century keeping an outstanding unity of style to it !

It hides numerous treasures. You will have to stop there for a while if you don’t want to miss them !

The Basilica

The mostpart of theBasilica isin the Romanesque style. This sanctuary has kept rich furniture ranging from the Romanesque period to the 17th century. There are also important remains of 15th century wall paintings that you can come and discover.

The tapestries

Notre-Dame de Beaune is known worldwide for its tapestries depicting Virgin Mary’s life; they are presented in the Basilica’s Choir. This exceptional collection dates from the 16th century. The major events in Mary’s life are evoked in successive scenesThis set of tapestries wasrestored by the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune’s nuns in 1852.

The organ

The Collegiate Church of Beaune is well-known for its Great Organ. This is probably one of the most beautiful instruments in Burgundy. It has a painted and sculpted case of exceptional class, with 4 keyboards, a pedal board and about fifty organ stops.

The Church Windows

The Collegiate Church of Beaune conceals a certain number of beautiful stained-glass windows that mostly date from the 19th century. The high windows of the choir are devoted to the Virgin’s Crowning. The church also keeps some window fragments dating back to the 15th and beginning of 16th century. There are some fragments of the New Art period in the ambulatory.

The cloister

The right transept’s gate of the Basilica opens on a cloister gallery composed of seven bays topped by part of ancient canonical buildings which are presently used as a presbytery. The only remaining cloister gallery, the chapter house, the presbytery’s door and the big chapter building all date back to the 13th century.
